Search engine optimization can be an esoteric science for some. Here is an article that introduces you to SEO basics.
How search engines work
A search engine operates, in the following order: 1) Crawling; 2) Deep Crawling Depth-first search (DFS); 3) Fresh Crawling Breadth-first search (BFS); 4) Indexing; 5) Searching. Web search engines work by storing information about a large number of web pages, which they retrieve from the WWW itself. These pages are retrieved by a web crawler (also known as a spider) ” an automated web browser which follows every link it sees, exclusions can be made by the use of robots.txt. The contents of each page are then analyzed to determine how it should be indexed. Data about web pages is stored in an index database for use in later queries. Some search engines, such as Google, store all or part of the source page (referred to as a cache) as well as information about the web pages, whereas some store every word of every page it finds, such as AltaVista. This cached page always holds the actual search text since it is the one that was actually indexed, so it can be very useful when the content of the current page has been updated and the search terms are no longer in it. This problem might be considered to be a mild form of linkrot, and Google’s handling of it increases usability by satisfying user expectations that the search terms will be on the returned web page. This satisfies the principle of least astonishment since the user normally expects the search terms to be on the returned pages. Increased search relevance makes these cached pages very useful, even beyond the fact that they may contain data that may no longer be available elsewhere. When a user comes to the search engine and makes a query, typically by giving keywords, the engine looks up the index and provides a listing of best-matching web pages according to its criteria, usually with a short summary containing the document’s title and sometimes parts of the text. Most search engines support the use of the boolean terms AND, OR and NOT to further specify the search query. An advanced feature is proximity search, which allows you to define the distance between keywords. The usefulness of a search engine depends on the relevance of the results it gives back. While there may be millions of Web pages that include a particular word or phrase, some pages may be more relevant, popular, or authoritative than others. Most search engines employ methods to rank the results to provide the “best” results first. How a search engine decides which pages are the best matches, and what order the results should be shown in, varies widely from one engine to another. The methods also change over time as Internet usage changes and new techniques evolve. Most web search engines are commercial ventures supported by advertising revenue and, as a result, some employ the controversial practice of allowing advertisers to pay money to have their listings ranked higher in search results. The vast majority of search engines are run by private companies using proprietary algorithms and closed databases, the most popular currently being Google, MSN Search, and Yahoo! Search. Avoid playing games, especially reading from a script. Most people can tell when you re using a script. There s nothing personal about it, and they pick up on that. Being artificial puts you in the typical salesperson category, which is exactly the role most of us detest. It doesn t feel authentic. And unless you re a born actor, it makes you feel skittish about cold calling. Allow the conversation be relaxed. Let it be the kind of conversation you would have with a family member. Practice makes perfect, right? And you may actually become friends with that new person the next time you pick up the phone. Shift your thinking away from what you want and focus instead on what their wants are.
So many of us have been trained think about our services and products, that we don t think about the client s point of view. We aren t really interested in their issues and how we can help solve them. Be interested in their world and their challenges. You ll find this intriguing. Most of us have a natural flair for problem solving. We enjoy fixing things. So find out what s going on with the person you re talking to. Make sure the solution is a true solution. Get rid of any hidden agendas and truly listen. Let them know you re interested in them and their world. Move outside your own sales agenda to focus on the needs of others.
This makes you a better human being and helps you leap past the fear of cold calling. Never assume anything beforehand. Allow the conversation to be one of exploration and discovery. SEO Tips: How to Organize Your Site For Fast Ranking
In my last keyword building article I wrote about how to select keywords that would generate the highest return with the least amount of work.
I demonstrated how employing advanced search strings and recording Overture data can be used to find keywords with very little competition and high search volumes. My conclusion was that by conducting keyword research in this manner, ranking for keywords becomes easier.
The next step in Keyword Building is learning how to organize a site around a keyword list for fast ranking and best results. The following is my strategy for doing so.
What You ll Need
- A finalized list of keywords as well as their corresponding search volumes and number of competitors.
- Excel, or some other spreadsheet program.
- An understanding of the site s industry, and which terms are semantically related.
- Enough SEO knowledge to decide which words from your list are “low competition.”
Low Competition Keywords
“Low competition” is a relative term. To illustrate why, search the term “Marietta, Georgia real estate” in Google. Here are the key numbers:
- 99 inachor and intitle competitors for the term
- 1,300 searches for the term each month
- 330.8 average backlinks for a top 10 result
- 4.2 average page rank of a top 10 result
Now here are some seemingly perplexing numbers regarding the 9th result:
- It has only 8 backlinks
- It also has a PR of 0
Meanwhile the 10th result has
- 240 backlinks
- PR of 3
This raises the question of why the 10th result doesn t rank higher than the 9th result, as well as why the 9th result is even on the first page. The answer is two-fold:
- The 9th result is a sub-page optimized singularly for that search term.
- The 9th result s domain has roughly 1.1 million more backlinks than any other site on the SERP and is a subdomain of Yahoo.com.
For Yahoo, a term with 99 competitors and 1,300 searches every month is very “low competition.” However, because it has optimized a page for the search term, and is well trusted by Google, it easily ranks.
When organizing your keywords, picking out the “low competition” words is an integral part to driving traffic. Devote a page to every word that will easily rank from your list, optimizing the title tag, h1 tag and keyword density.
Remember, just as you look to Yahoo, thinking, “I wish I could rank for a word like that without having to link-build” so too will a site smaller than yours say of your “low competition” keyword pages.
High Competition Keywords
Keywords that will require a link-building strategy before ranking are considered “high competition.” High competition keywords should be broken down into semantically similar groups. Intuition is largely used to separate the keywords, but here are a few universal guidelines:
- Keep the groups under 6 words each.
- Group phrases together with more than one word in common.
- Check to see if two keywords return similar results in Google.
- No group should have only 1 keyword. Maximize the efforts of your link building.
Once the keywords have been semantically split, prepare an optimized title tag containing all of the keywords from that group. Also choose one word from each group which is the most important to get ranking. That term should be what is in the anchor text of your links when you begin a link building campaign.
Overall, this strategy will save you hours of fiddling and tweaking. Remember, SEO is no different than any other business process - it requires a plan. Practice these tips and you will see success.

Maybe you’ve tried your hand at SEO with little success or maybe you’ve hired someone that promised you top placement and the results did not last or they were not what you hoped. Well I’m here to tell you that SEO is something everyone can do with a little patience and some basic computer skills. Let me make it simple and just come right out and say it. Search engine optimization is almost all about getting backlinks to your site and getting a lot of them if you’re in a competitive market. That’s right; if you want to win the SEO game then you’ve got to get other websites to link to you. The good news is that there are several ways to get links without paying someone an arm and a leg to do what you can easily do yourself. Don’t get me wrong there are other techniques that you need to focus on like having your keywords sprinkled throughout the text of your page, making use of the h1 tag on your page, having an image on your page that has your keyword in the name of the image and a few others. These techniques are called on-page-optimization and while they are important they are all secondary to getting backlinks commonly referred to as off-page-optimization. Okay so now that we understand that off-page-optimization is the most important aspect, how do you get these backlinks that I’ve been speaking of? Well I’m going to tell you right here. There are three main ways to get backlinks and I’ll start with my favorite. First and the best I believe is writing articles and submitting them to article directories just like this one. At the end of this article you’ll see a link to my website. That’s a backlink. What’s so cool is that article directories don’t cost anything for you to submit your articles to and there are literally hundreds of them out there. Second you can submit your site to website directories. Yes many website directories charge you to have a link on their directory but there are also hundreds that don’t charge. All you have to do is go to the directory and give: a sentence or two about your site, the url, your name and sometimes your email address. Another common way to get backlinks to your site is to trade links with other webmasters. This technique is called reciprocal linking. It’s not quite as effective as it used to be but it wouldn’t hurt to have it in your arsenal of linking strategies. Basically what you do is go out and find some sites that relate to yours and put a link to that site somewhere on your site, preferably on a page specifically dedicated to other site links. Then you email that webmaster and basically tell him/her that you’ve placed his/her website link on your site and would like him/her to return the favor. This is my least favorite because a lot of webmasters just don’t respond. I guess because they don’t understand the value of getting links to their site. Okay so now that we’ve talked about getting links to your site there is a very important aspect of linking that you need to know. When another site places a link to your site you need to specify what the anchor text is going to be. What is anchor text? Good question. The anchor text is the wording that contains the link to your site. For example at the bottom of this article as I mentioned before there’s a link to my own site. But instead of seeing the domain you see the name of my site, “Internet Marketing Debunked”. The text is blue and underlined. That’s called the anchor text. Typically whatever keyword phrase you want to rank for on the search engines is the phrase that you want to use for the anchor text. Make sense? Okay so I’ve given you the basics to SEO and 3 easy and free ways to implement this technique. Now go out and get as many links as you can and don’t stop.
